Huawei Digital Energy’s Fang Liangzhou: Grid-Forming Energy Storage Accelerates Carbon Neutrality

27 Mar.,2025

Huawei's Fang Liangzhou discussed the importance of grid-forming energy storage in achieving carbon neutrality at the 2024 summit. Huawei has been leading innovations in smart energy storage solutions to enhance renewable energy integration into power grids and promote low-carbon development globally.

[Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, December 18, 2024] The 2024 Grid-Forming Technology Summit, themed "Empowering the Next Energy Era," was grandly held at the Riyadh Regi Hotel in Saudi Arabia. Leading business executives and industry experts from around the world gathered to share cutting-edge views on the global energy sector and discuss low-carbon innovation technologies. Fang Liangzhou, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei Digital Energy, was invited to attend and delivered a keynote speech on "Grid-Forming Energy Storage Accelerates Carbon Neutrality," advocating for green and low-carbon development in the industry.

With the global push for carbon neutrality accelerating and the rapid growth of renewable energy, it is predicted that by 2030, the global installed capacity of renewable energy will triple compared to 2022, with renewable energy penetration in global power systems reaching as high as about 62%. On the energy production side, the rapid increase in renewable energy penetration and the high proportion of power electronic devices in the grid pose a "dual-high" challenge (high proportion of renewable energy and high proportion of power electronic equipment). Fang Liangzhou stated that Huawei Digital Energy has been continuously accumulating expertise in renewable energy integration and power grid-friendly technologies. The company has launched the intelligent string-type grid-forming energy storage solution, which actively stabilizes the grid through three key stabilizing actions: voltage stabilization, frequency stabilization, and power angle stabilization. This solution greatly enhances the grid's ability to absorb renewable energy and helps address the challenges of renewable energy development.

In China, under the leadership and support of the National Energy Administration and State Grid, Huawei has worked with its customer partners to advance grid-forming energy storage projects. Huawei has completed the performance testing of the world’s first 100MWh wind-storage string-type grid-forming energy storage station in Hami, the world’s first string-type grid-forming energy storage station artificial short-circuit disturbance test in Golmud, Qinghai, and the world’s first high-altitude string-type grid-forming energy storage artificial short-circuit test in Ali.

In the Middle East, the first phase of the 400MW photovoltaic and 1.3GWh energy storage system in Saudi Arabia's Red Sea New City adopts Huawei's intelligent string-type grid-forming energy storage solution. The project has been in full operation since September 2023 and has provided more than 1 billion kWh of green electricity, becoming the world's first 100% renewable energy-powered city microgrid. The project has been running safely and stably for a year, thoroughly validating key grid-forming technologies, including 1000 PCS synchronized grid formation, minute-level power recovery, resistance to 100% transformer switching impact, and zero-voltage fault ride-through during grid outages.

At this summit, prominent figures gathered, including Xing Qing, President of Huawei Digital Energy Business Department for the Middle East and Central Asia, Huawei’s Vice President of Intelligent Photovoltaic Business Hao Yingtao, Dr. Carlos Alvarez Ortega, Director of Huawei Digital Energy Grid Integration Solutions, renewable energy executive consultant Thierry Pollet, Dr. Xin Yaohong, Chief Expert of China Electric Power Enterprise Federation and former Deputy Director of the National Power Dispatching and Control Center, and Dr. Mohamed Abido, Professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), who all shared insights and important views on "Grid-Forming Energy Storage Technology."

As a key support technology for the new power system, grid-forming technology has become a technological high ground for innovation in power systems across countries. Many nations are pushing forward its development through technical standards, policies, and commercial project applications. In the future, Huawei Digital Energy will continue to invest in innovation, working with customers and partners to actively promote the high-quality development of the grid-forming energy storage industry and co-create a green and beautiful future.
