Ukrainian "Azov Regiment" modified a T-64 tank to create the "Azovets"
According to a report on the website of Russia's RT TV channel, based on a video released on April 5th, the Russian military has discovered a heavily damaged and buried heavy armored combat vehicle that was once thought to be a revolutionary innovation of the Ukrainian army.
The report states that engineers of the Ukrainian "Azov Regiment" modified a T-64 tank to create the "Azovets" tank in 2015. This tank is equipped with two automatic turrets, each with two 23mm machine guns and a machine gun, as well as anti-tank missile launchers.
However, this $5 million vehicle was never put into mass production. The Russian military claims that part of the reason is that the "Azovets" tank weighs 41 tons, which is a heavy burden for its engine, and the tank lacks a thermal imager, making its equipment mediocre and unsuitable for combat missions. In October 2016, the only prototype of this tank was stolen and later found at the "Azov Regiment" base, but the engine and gearbox were damaged.
According to the Russian media, the "Azov Regiment" simply buried it. After the Russian military arrived, local residents provided the location of the burial site, and the "Azovets" tank was captured by the Russian military.
