What Is Polyethylene Tape?

Polyethylene tape is a type of plastic tape made from a polyethylene film backed with a rubber adhesive. Polyethylene film is made from a thermoplastic polymer made from the polymerization of ethylene gas. A rubber adhesive is added to the polyethylene film to make a strong tape that is durable and versatile.

There are several types of polyethylene film, each with a different density and use. Polyethylene tape is categorized by the tape’s density:

  • Low-Density Polyethylene Film (LDPE)
  • Linear Low-Density Polyethylene Film (LLDPE)
  • Medium-Density Polyethylene Film (MDPE)
  • High-Density Polyethylene Film (HDPE)

In addition to different densities, polyethylene film tapes are available in different thicknesses, widths, lengths, and colors.

Where Can You Use Polyethylene Tape?

Polyethylene tape can be used as construction tape, masking tape, patching tape, repair tape, or stucco tape. Stucco tape is a heavy-duty construction tape that can adhere to numerous types of surfaces, like stucco. It’s not limited to stucco, however. You can use it for concrete, brick, metal, vinyl, and wood.

Polyethylene tape is not only adhesive to a variety of surfaces, but it is also chemical resistant, moisture resistant, abrasion resistant, and can be UV resistant, making it an excellent protective tape. It will not crack or crease in low temperatures and does not yellow with age.

Protective plastic sheets and films can also be made of polyethylene. The surface protection tape that you find on new appliances is made of polyethylene film.

The various colors available make polyethylene film tapes useful for color coding. Many of Tape Jungle’s products are available in up to seven colors, in addition to clear. Whether you need polyethylene tape or one of the many other kinds of tape in various sizes, colors, and thicknesses, you can find it at Tape Jungle.

What Are the Types of Polyethylene Tape?

Tape Jungle offers several types of polyethylene film tape in various thicknesses and densities. Tape thickness is measured in mils — one mil is one one-thousandth of an inch. Simply choose the tape that works best for your application.

LDPE Mosaic Tile Tape

Low-Density Polyethylene Film (LDPE) Mosaic Tile Tape (63502M) is a low-density, crystal-clear tape with acrylic adhesive that can temporarily hold stone, glass, and ceramic tiles during transit and installation. After you have installed the tiles, this tape releases easily without leaving any residue. Tape widths range from 3 inches (76 millimeters) to 54 inches (1,372 millimeters).

Polyethylene Film Tape 5.5 Mil 36 Yd

Polyethylene film tape (6350X) is a 5.5-mil thick tape with acrylic rubber adhesive. This film tape is flexible, conformable, durable, and chemical resistant. It is also resistant to tears, punctures, and abrasions, which makes it a good protective tape. It is also a good barrier tape for gas and moisture-proofing. Taping with polyethylene film tape produces a permanent bond with no edge bleeding.

This tape comes in eight colors:

  • Optically Clear
  • White
  • Green
  • Orange
  • Red
  • Blue
  • Yellow
  • Black

The colors will not yellow with age. Available widths range from one-fourth of an inch (6 millimeters) to 54 inches (1,372 millimeters).

Polyethylene Film Tape 7 Mil Rubber

Polyethylene film tape (63507) is a 7-mil thick, low-density polyethylene tape coated on one side with a synthetic rubber adhesive that stays permanently tacky. This tape bonds well through a wide range of temperatures and has a particularly good bonding ability at low temperatures. It is conformable, waterproof, tear-resistant, and chemical resistant.

This tape can be used for wire identification, seaming and splicing of films, and surface protection. Available colors are clear, black, white, and red. Widths range from one-fourth of an inch (6 millimeters) to 44 inches (1,118 millimeters).

Polyethylene Film Tape 7 Mil UV 60 Yd

Polyethylene film tape (63535) is a 7-mil thick tape coated on one side with a synthetic rubber adhesive. This particular tape is UV-resistant and can form a water-tight seal, making it a good tape for outdoor use. It is designed to be able to mask windows and doors in stucco fabrication and other construction applications. This tape is available in white or red. Available widths range from 2 inches (48 millimeters) to 44 inches (1,118 millimeters).

Polyethylene Film Tape 9 Mil Rubber

Polyethylene film tape (63536) is 9 mils thick — the thickest polyethylene film tape available at Tape Jungle. Its applications include:

  • Construction projects
  • Splicing
  • Seaming
  • Surface protection
  • Wire identification
  • Boating and RV taping
  • Packaging
  • Repairing and patching

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Red
  • White
  • Yellow

Double-Coated Polyethylene Foam Tape

If you’re looking for a thicker tape,double-coated polyethylene foam tape (15XXX) comes in thicknesses from one thirty-second to one-eighth of an inch and offers excellent compressibility, flexibility, and conformability.

Foam tapes can be used for padding, bonding, sealing, insulation, and mounting applications.

Window Glazing Double-Coated Polyethylene Foam Tape

Window glazing tape (15063B) is a closed-cell, double-coated foam tape with a poly liner. The tape is one-sixteenth of an inch thick, widths range from one-fourth of an inch (6 millimeters) to one inch (24 millimeters), and it is available in black or white. Window glazing tape (15123B) is a thicker option at one-eighth of an inch thick.

Its high shear strength makes window glazing tape a good option for mounting on vertical surfaces. It has good resistance to humidity, acid, oils, and grease. As a polyethylene foam tape, it has excellent conformability, even conforming to rough or uneven surfaces.
