Under the trend of deepening the transformation of the automotive industry towards electrification, autonomous driving, and circular economy, material manufacturer Covestro has reached a memorandum of understanding with China's leading new energy vehicle enterprise Ideal Automobile. The two sides will jointly build a joint innovation platform to develop cutting-edge material technologies and applications for the future, while committed to improving the recycling rate of materials in the automotive value chain and reducing carbon emissions.

Guido Naberfeld, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing for the Automotive Business of Covestro's Engineering Plastics Division, said, "We are thrilled to join forces with Ideal Automotive to develop future oriented transportation solutions. By combining Covestro's expertise in engineering plastics and recycling solutions, as well as Ideal Automotive's pioneering technologies in intelligence and electrification, we will jointly drive the automotive industry towards a more sustainable future

This joint innovation platform will focus on developing more sustainable engineering plastics using alternative materials such as biological waste and recycled materials, and promoting their application in automotive components. For example, both parties will explore the application of engineering plastics containing a share of recycled biomass raw materials in components such as automotive lighting, functional interior and exterior decoration, and intelligent system components, which are produced by Covestro based on the mass balance method. Both parties will also collaborate with value chain partners to explore innovative processes and business models for using recycled headlight materials for new car components.

In addition, both parties will deepen cooperation in the fields of lighting, intelligent systems, and thermal management solutions, developing high-performance optical grade materials, intelligent surface technology, new in mold electronic processes, and thermal conductivity solutions.

Liao Mengjun, Vice President of R&D and Operations at Ideal Automobile, said, "Ideal Automobile is committed to achieving the 'smart+electric' dual energy strategy through innovative materials and design, providing users with a safer, more comfortable, more convenient, and more refined travel experience. Our cooperation with Covestro will accelerate our exploration in the field of advanced materials and support users' constantly upgrading product needs

The signing ceremony was held at the Covestro Shanghai Integrated Base, during which both parties also released two industry-leading automotive grade new materials jointly developed - innovative light diffusion and infrared transmission clone ® Polycarbonate. Among them, the lampshade made of this new type of light diffusing polycarbonate can achieve a more exquisite intelligent headlight uniform lighting effect, which can meet the ultimate demand of ideal cars for intelligent headlight styling and delicacy. The new infrared transparent polycarbonate material can achieve a high transmittance of over 85% in the near-infrared band. Compared with conventional black polycarbonate that absorbs solar energy in all bands, it can greatly improve the anti light aging performance of components and enhance the durability of ideal car intelligent headlights.
