The Benefits of Using car batteries stop start

16 Apr.,2024

Start/ stop batteries are designed for vehicles with start/stop systems that automatically turn off the engine when the vehicle is stopped to save fuel. But can you use a start/stop battery in a normal car?

The answer is yes, you can use a start/stop battery in a normal car. However, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Start/stop batteries are designed to handle frequent cycles of discharging and recharging, which is what makes them ideal for start/stop systems. They also typically have a higher capacity than regular car batteries. This means they can provide more power and last longer.

In a normal car, a start/stop battery can provide many benefits. For example, if you live in a cold climate, a start/stop battery can handle the increased demands of cold weather starting. It can also provide more power to accessories like audio systems, lights, and air conditioning.

However, it's important to note that start/stop batteries are typically more expensive than regular car batteries. They also may not fit in all vehicles, so it's important to check the specifications before purchasing one,

But if you attempt to use a normal battery on start/ stop type car, it will not only result in battery failure but also add extra fuel consumption. Here are some battery selection tips also.

Why traditional lead-acid start/stop car battery is not recommended?

A lead-acid car battery is a storage device on car for electrical energy and though though nowadays it still play a dominant role in  an automotive starting battery market, its defects cannot be ignored, like high pollution, heavy weight, low energy density, short cycle life, and easy overcharge and over-discharge. Even the industry successively launched high-end EFB and AGM lead-acid batteries to cater some of the defects, like emission, battery life, it still looks dwarfed by new energy lithium car batteries.

What’s LiFePO4 Deep cycle Car battery and why choose it?

LiFePO4 Deep cycle Car battery is a new generation of car start-stop battery that use car-grade lithium iron phosphate batteries with a built-in intelligent battery management system(BMS). It’s more safety, reliability and has smaller size, lighter weight, and longer cycle life. Details are as below(Take Houny smart Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery as examples)

1. Long life

The cycle life of lead-acid batteries is generally 250 to 300 times, while that of lithium iron phosphate battery is about 3000 times. If the vehicle is parked for a long time without starting, the car battery will be exhausted, in this case,lead-acid battery will be scrapped while lithium iron phosphate battery can still be used normally after being charged without normal life cycle.

2.Ensure safety

Not like acid battery, the main component of lithium iron phosphate battery is iron, which is not easy to catch fire and explode.

3. Improve power and reduce fuel consumption

Houny car battery is with features of low internal resistance, fast ignition speed and larger output current and electric spark, so it can get the fuel fully burned. Compared to lead-acid batteries,Lithium iron phosphate batteries reduce fuel consumption by 5% with battery’s peak horsepower and peak torque increased by about 4.5%, and 3%.

4. High energy density

Under the same volume, the energy density of lithium iron phosphate battery is 50% higher than that of lead-acid battery and Lifepo4 car battery’s weight is 70% lighter than that of lead acid battery.

5. High temperature performance

The peak value of lithium iron phosphate electric heating can reach 350℃~500℃ while that of Lithium Manganate and lithium Borate are around 200°C.

And the operating temperature range of lithium iron phosphate is -20℃~80℃ while that of lead-acid batteries is -20℃~50℃.

6. Energy Saving

The weight of lithium iron phosphate batteries is 70% less than that of lead-acid batteries. This allows the car to accelerate faster and consume less fuel.

7. Improve sound quality

The battery has low internal resistance and high transient output power, which fully meets the stringent requirements for instantaneous high-current power supply when the speaker is working, making the mid-bass sound thicker and the treble more transparent.

8,Science and environmental protection

Houny Lithium iron phosphate car start\ stop batteries do not contain heavy metals and rare metals, are non-toxic, non-polluting, and comply with European RoHS regulations. Used batteries can be recycled, refined and reused.

9. Safe and reliable

Built-in intelligence BMS-The battery management system has multiple protection functions such as overcharge, over-discharge, over-current, over-voltage, over-temperature, overload, short circuit protection, etc, to avoid battery damage.

Why do I need a special battery for the automatic start-stop system?

Every starting process is associated with a large amount of energy from a car battery. The battery must be in a very good condition to reliably supply a high starting current. Especially with modern vehicles with automatic start-stop systems, the engine is switched off several times during the journey. During these phases the battery continues to supply all of the electrical consumers with energy. A conventional starter battery (SLI) is not designed for this charge output (i.e. continuous discharging and charging).

Only a battery with start-stop technology can deal with these demands and withstand the strain.

The generator charges the starter battery while driving

In a car which is not equipped with an automatic start-stop system, the starting process is usually a one-off event. While driving, the generator supplies the electrical consumers such as the entertainment system and navigation device, so that if the generator is working, there is no discharge of the starter battery during the journey.

The start-stop battery has a double load

The case is different for cars with start-stop technology. During a journey through the town, the battery is subjected to a series of start and stop periods. If the car is stationary at traffic lights with the engine stopped, electrical consumers such as lights, windshield wipers, radio or displays still need power. The load is increased by continuous discharge and charging.

In particular, short journeys present a challenge for the battery. Especially with old batteries and in winter, the charge acceptance of the battery reduces, so that adequate recharging during short journeys is not always ensured. This can result in gradual discharge of the battery, so that at some point, the battery no longer has enough energy to start the engine. Due to the special technology, the internal resistance of AGM batteries remains considerably lower than that of conventional batteries over their entire life, so that sufficient charge acceptance is also ensured over a long period and short journeys with many start-stop phases can be handled better by AGM batteries.

Three advantages of AGM batteries

Excellent cold-start characteristics

AGM batteries have a large cold start current. They powerfully start the starter motor and reduce its running time. Thanks to the cycle stability of AGM batteries the engine can be switched off and started again several times at short intervals, without the risk of difficulties when restarting.

Balanced state of charge

With modern vehicles, the AGM battery is not only charged by the generator, but is also fed by the braking energy recovery system. Normal starter batteries must be kept permanently fully charged and can therefore not absorb the energy which is generated by recuperation. AGM batteries can be operated in the partial charge range and therefore provide sufficient “extra” capacity to store the energy which is generated on braking.

High reserve capacity

The high reserve capacity ensures the power supply for all types of electrical components. The cycle stability of AGM technology ensures the power supply to components while also providing a high starting power. Even if the battery is not fully charged, because, for example, electronic assistants and consumers which ensure comfort are supplied during a stop, or the generator has been temporarily decoupled to reduce the load on the engine.

Interesting facts about start-stop technology

Start-stop systems require a battery with modern technology, because normal starter batteries are not designed to meet the higher demands of these vehicles.

The architecture of the electrical system in modern vehicles requires a compatible battery technology in order to function properly and reliably. For this reason, in many vehicles, new batteries must be “registered” – the Battery Management System (BMS) must know what type of battery is installed in the vehicle in order to exploit its full potential. If an incorrect battery is installed in the vehicle or is not correctly registered, this can result in premature battery deterioration and another breakdown.

For this reason, only EFB or AGM batteries should be installed in vehicles with automatic stop-start systems. If an AGM battery is already installed in the vehicle, it must always be replaced with another AGM battery.
