A Bluetooth speaker is a rather handy device to have. These speakers are generally portable and easy to carry around. However, there are just far too many options — across price range — available in the market. We tell you six things that you should keep in mind before buying a Bluetooth speaker:

1

6

Size does matter: Check for weight and other dimensions

As we said traditionally Bluetooth speakers are lightweight and easy to carry but there are heavier options also available. Check for the weight and other dimensions and if you want one that is portable then go for the lightweight options. Small speakers too can pack in a lot of power.

Battery life should be reasonably good

You probably already have too many devices to charge, why add another one? Since Bluetooth speakers are wireless, it is vital that they have long lasting battery life so you don’t have to charge it again and again. 6-8 hours of battery life should be the minimum you should seek in a Bluetooth speaker.

Smarter the better

Check if the Bluetooth speaker is smart or not — in other words whether it can access voice commands or if it can work with other smart gadgets in your home.

4

6

Audio quality, Bluetooth version

There are multiple things that combine together to deliver good audio output in a Bluetooth speaker. These include frequency response, impedance and sensitivity. Across price ranges, these will differ and depending on how much you want to spend, the audio quality will differ. Generally, a premium Bluetooth speaker will have a frequency response between 20Hz to 20kHz. Similarly, the impedance will be between six ohms and eight ohms. Also, speakers supporting Bluetooth version 5.0 will offer longer connectivity range.

Check for the ports on the speaker

Generally, a Bluetooth speaker will have just one port for charging. This could be a microUSB port or a Type-C port — check for this before buying a speaker. Also, if you can get a 3.5mm jack or an aux then it can help in connecting the speaker to a laptop or phone in case Bluetooth connectivity is giving issues.

6

Check for water and dust resistance

If you want a speaker for outdoors then check if it has IP67 rating or not. An IP68 rated speaker can be dunked in water for about 30 minutes without any damage as such.
